Memorial mass to honor fallen CPD Officer Enrique Martinez scheduled for Sunday morning at Mount Greenwood church
CHICAGO — A memorial mass Sunday morning on the city's Southwest Side will honor fallen Chicago Police Department Officer Enrique Martinez, who was killed in the line of duty last week.
St. Christina Catholic Church in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood has invited police officers, firefighters and paramedics to attend the special mass in a show of solidarity with the city's first responders. Martinez's funeral is scheduled to take place next week. Sunday's service at St. Christina begins at 10:30 a.m.
Martinez, 26, would've celebrated his third anniversary with CPD next month.

Last Monday night, Martinez and his partner responded to a call in the Chatham neighborhood on Chicago's South Side, which turned out to be unfounded.
While they were in the 8000 block of South Ingleside Avenue, Martinez and his partner saw a double-parked Ford Escape with a broken tail light and fraudulent registration. The officers approached the car to conduct a traffic stop.
Prosecutors said in court last week that a passenger in the vehicle grabbed a machine gun and shot Martinez five times. The driver of the vehicle was also killed.
Darion McMillian, 23, of south suburban Harvey has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder — one being first-degree murder of a police officer — along with residential burglary, unlawful use of a weapon-machine gun, and unlawful use of a weapon.
A judge at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse denied McMillian bond during a hearing Thursday, before he was transported back to the Cook County Jail.

After fatally shooting Martinez and the driver of his vehicle, police say McMillian pushed the driver's body out of the car, put the car in reverse, and injured another officer. Police say McMillian then went into a home, where he attempted to cut off his ankle monitor.

McMillian has served time in connection with a 2019 shooting and has two pending cases in Will County.
Martinez is the second CPD officer killed in the line of duty this year. Officer Luis Huesca was shot and killed in Gage Park in April while returning home from a work shift.
