“More Tactical” – Emily Fox Unleashes on Major Difference in WSL Compared to NWSL

pinch"I can't imagine going anywhere else." This is what Emily Fox remarked when asked if she would ever consider a return to the NWSL, having left just a year ago to sign with Arsenal. Little does this statement reflect how quickly she has fallen for the London side. More than that her preference for the atmosphere of the WSL. So, what exactly compelled the USWNT defender to snub the NWSL and make such a significant move?

Every nation's domestic league has its own playing style. While things may be a bit about maintaining physicality and tempo, it's rather a mix of both with an extra tinch of tactical prowess. "It is more tactical in terms of our game plan and how we're going to break down teams," acknowledged Emily Fox in the latest episode of The Women's Game podcast.

"I think it resonates a lot with the national team and how we play against a lot of opponents so I felt like coming here, I have felt more prepared in that sense," continued Emily, drawing parallels to how things are similar on the international front compared to England's domestic league. Then again, it doesn't mean everything is accustomed to her.

As a right-back, Emily Fox's role often involves breaking down a low block. The role requires her to be patient while also being clinical. She understands she might only get one opportunity for a cross, a final ball, or a shot. Therefore, she must make the most of that chance. "I think it's just added more experience and I feel like I'm still learning in terms of tactics," concluded Fox.

From the looks of it, the challenge has seemingly increased for the former North Carolina Courage and Racing Louisville star since she left the NWSL. Although both leagues provide entertainment and challenges, Emily Fox found the competition in England more demanding. This ultimately led to her departure from the NWSL.

Emily Fox opens up on why she left NWSL for WSL Although everything seemed fine in the States, Emily Fox felt she needed a spark in her career. "I just wanted to have a change and push myself, both on and off the pitch," she explained.

For Emily, the priority when playing abroad is to elevate her game, and there's no better way to do that than by competing against some of the most prominent English rivals and other European clubs in the prestigious UEFA Women's Champions League. However, it was Arsenal's unique offerings that Fox found irresistible.

"Specifically with Arsenal, I just felt like they aligned a lot with my values in terms of wanting the women's game to grow, not only for the club but in England and globally and so I thought that was really special, I wanted to challenge myself and put myself in an environment that was going to be uncomfortable—360," added the 26-year-old.
