MOUNT PLEASANT, Texas ( KETK ) – As people across East Texas and beyond continue to grapple with high costs of living, one local school district approved reducing their tax rate to the lowest level since the 80s.

At their regular Monday night meeting, the Mount Pleasant ISD Board of Trustees approved a tax rate cut from $.8952 to $.8857 for the coming year. This will be the district's second straight year with with the lowest tax rate in more than 30 years.

It's a reduction of $.0095, including $.6669 for maintenance and operations (for the district's day-to-day operations) and $0.2188 for interest and sinking (funds for debt services).

"We have just adopted the lowest tax rate since 1988 at Mount Pleasant ISD," said MPISD Superintendent Judd Marshall. "We have done this because of a lot of hard work from our administration and chief financial officer. We understand that everyone's cost of living is really high right now, and we wanted to do everything we can do to help give some money back to our taxpayers."
