MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — The Myrtle Beach Police Foundation will host the second annual Jacob Hancher "High Speed" 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run on Saturday. The race honors Hancher, a 23-year-old Myrtle Beach police officer who was shot and killed in October 2020 while responding to a domestic incident on 14th Avenue. Jacob Duesing, the foundation's president, remembered Hancher as an outgoing, energetic, and positive person. The event is meant to honor Hancher and all officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service. If you are an avid runner, you can run the 5K and the 1-Mile Fun Run. This year, the 5K is a timed race on a closed course. You can also walk the races, cheer from the sidelines and enjoy some music. Officials said your presence shows the community's law enforcement officers just how much the community supports them. "It's really good to see the community support that we have here in Myrtle Beach," Duesing said. "We have a great community atmosphere that's always supporting our first responders. When businesses in the community just come out to support us, it really shows our officers that they have a really big backing." There will be raffles at the event, with proceeds from ticket sales going to the foundation and Brotherhood for the Fallen – South Carolina. You can sign up for the 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run here . All proceeds will go to the foundation's scholarship foundation set up in Hancher's honor to help preserve his legacy for years to come. "We're offering scholarships for a current member of the Myrtle Beach Police Department that's seeking education, somebody at the Myrtle Beach High School that's seeking higher education, and there will be one additional scholarship that will be offered," Duesing said. The 5K is at 9:30 a.m. at Tidal Creek Brewhouse. Bib pickup will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday at the Black Dog Running Company. You can also pick them up and register on Saturday morning. * * * Skylar Musick is a multimedia journalist at News13. Skylar is originally from Long Island, New York.
