MONROE, La. (KNOE) - National Constitution Day is recognized on September 17 every year. To celebrate it this year, the NELA Children's Museum set up a real voting booth to teach kids about the importance of voting.

Instead of political candidates, children got the chance to vote on their favorite cookie and museum exhibit.

Melissa Saye with the NELA Children's Museum, says it's necessary to teach the next generation how America runs.

"It's your choice. You know, as an American citizen, it's something that we have. We are gifted in living in the United States, and it's certainly an honor to be able to have the gift of being able to vote. So the voting machine, it gives them an idea of what they have to look forward to as they grow to, you know, give their opinion and be a part of the process."

Judge Wendell Manning was there with a piece of his private library that included a life-sized copy of the Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

"... To be able to come out and speak to young people to highlight the importance of what we do and the good that we can do through our law is good."

The children said they enjoyed their time at the museum. The White House was voted "favorite exhibit" and kids chose Chocolate Chip as their "favorite cookie."
