North Carolina mountains get first snow of the season

NORTH CAROLINA ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — It was a winter wonderland Wednesday morning for some of the mountains, as elevations above 3,500' received their first snow of the season.

This first chance of snow was very elevation-dependent. Spots like Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain had white grounds Wednesday morning, while areas below 4,000' just saw a few flakes. Just trace amounts for Boone and Jefferson.

The more noticeable snowfall totals came from Beech Mountain and Roan Mountain.

The mountains usually get their first snow of the season around late October and early November. However, it can come earlier.

While the Charlotte region did not receive any snow, the Queen City will be cold enough for some potential frost Wednesday night. As temperatures fall into the 30s.

The mountains will get their first freeze this week, but could they also see snow?

If you are looking to hold on to your plants for a little while longer, be sure to bring them inside. Some milder weather this weekend should help the growing season last a little longer.

A freeze is likely for our mountain communities, which will likely end the growing season for the high country.
