Ocean City reopens beaches after waste that washed ashore caused health concerns

Days after garbage of unknown origin washed ashore in Ocean City, Maryland, town officials are reopening the beaches to the public, according to a statement.

Town officials posted on social media that they worked with Worcester County Health Department and Environmental Programs to conduct water testing, while crews performed several days of beach sweeping.

"As we reopen the ocean, we want to remind everyone of the importance of swimming in front of a lifeguard and only when the guards are on duty," Ocean City Emergency Services Director Joe Theobald said in a statement. "Your safety remains our top priority. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding throughout this situation."

Beaches in Ocean City, and elsewhere in Maryland, Delaware and Virginia, were shut down after medical waste washed ashore in several popular beaches. The medical waste also landed on Maryland'sAssateague Island and Delaware'sRehoboth and Dewey beaches among others.

On Wednesday, Maryland State Parks advised Assateague Island visitors to wear shoes with the hope of removing beach restrictions by the weekend.
