Omaha nursing students get experience treating mental health patients in Lincoln
A new partnership between the College of Saint Mary in Omaha and the Lincoln Regional Center allows nursing students to get experience in a mental health setting while giving the psychiatric hospital additional working professionals.
The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, which operates the Lincoln Regional Center, announced the partnership on Tuesday.
Currently, there are 22 students enrolled to train at the Lincoln Regional Center who started in late September.
Hospital administrator Mitchell Bruening said the students have been a tremendous asset.
"In the short time they have been at LRC, I have seen the students learn, treat all with dignity, and serve Nebraskans with compassion," Bruening said in a news release.
Students are gaining experience treating adult patients with severe and persistent mental challenges and their discharge plans. The students will also assist with health education and group activities for patients to explore mental health support in structured and community-based settings.
Christi Glesmann, assistant dean for health sciences at the college, said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to provide care that "honors the dignity and needs of every individual."
"This collaboration offers tremendous opportunities for our nursing students to gain invaluable clinical experience while learning the importance of compassionate care," Glesmann said in a news release. "Together, we are building a stronger nursing workforce that will positively impact the health and well-being of all Nebraskans and our Nebraska communities."
