Open Door Mission serves free meals to Omaha veterans

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Steak, chicken, mashed potatoes and vegetable medley. There was plenty of food served up at the Open Door Mission Saturday. "In honor of veterans, we're serving not only veterans, but everybody that lives with us here at Open Door Mission," said chief community relations officer Amy Harvey. It was the mission's annual banquet in honor of veterans. The Wounded Warrior Project sponsored it, donating five thousand dollars so the mission could buy the food for the event. Wardell smith/army veteran "I know some wonderful people here," said retired Army Capt. Wardell Smith He said he spent his Saturday evening at the mission to be around people at the shelter. "(It) raises enthusiasm," he said. "It brings out their faith, the Christianity they always espouse about." That's part of the banquet's goal: Lifting people's spirits while they work to improve their owns lives. "Anytime people come to serve or to help out here or notice them, it gives them encouragement and kind of hope to keep being able to move on," Harvey said. The mission said it could always use the community's help, whether that's through volunteering or donations .
