Open Thread Question of the Day: What level of success the rest of the season would make you want the Bears to retain Matt Eberflus for 2025?

A few weeks ago, there couldn't be more positivity around the Chicago Bears . They were sitting at 4-2, and Caleb Williams looked like he was about to push Jayden Daniels for rookie of the year.

But two games after the bye, the players look disinterested, Caleb Williams has regressed, and the Bears are on a two-game losing streak.

Question of the Day: What level of success the rest of the season would make you want the Bears to retain Matt Eberflus for 2025? Now again, look at the question: What would make YOU want to keep Eberflus, not the Bears?

We know the most important aspect of the season is the development of Caleb Williams, and if Williams plays great in the back half of the season, that would certainly bode well for Eberflus, but at the same time, if Williams plays well, the Bears are going to win some games, even against tough opponents, by default.

But is there a number of wins? Is it a playoff berth regardless of the win total? Would a playoff win cement it? At what point would you, the fan, say to yourself that Matt Eberflus should keep his job?

My answer: With how the NFC is going this season, I don't think Eberflus' job should be tied to a playoff berth. Now, forget the NFC South and NFC West, and let's just say the division winner makes the playoffs only. But in the other two divisions, between Washington, Philadelphia, Detroit, Minnesota, and Green Bay, it's highly probable that all five of those teams win 11 games. That means the Bears could get hot, win 11 games, and potentially miss the playoffs by a tiebreaker. Most likely they wouldn't, but it's possible. Lovie Smith was fired after going 10-6 because he missed the playoffs. That's nonsensical to me.

I don't think 11-6 is possible, and if I'm being honest I don't even think 10-7 is possible, but if the Bears do finish 10-7 and miss the playoffs, I think that if they finish the season 6-3 that means Williams is almost certainly playing well and the Bears are beating good teams.

Even if they beat New England and Seattle, that still means they would win four games against San Francisco and the three teams in the North. That would mean the Bears had turned the corner and learned the beat good teams, Eberflus should keep his job.

If the Bears finish 8-9 or worse, I wouldn't be comfortable keeping Eberflus. I think 9-8 is the tough spot. I think the Bears would keep him at 9-8 but would I want them to? I think at that point I would have to decide in the moment because it would depend on how the team played in the losses and how Williams had developed.

But 10 wins and strong play from Caleb Williams is the number where I would say that the decision-makers at Halas Hall should keep Eberflus around for 2025.

What do you say, Bears fans? If the team reaches 10 wins and Caleb looks the part, are you backing the 'Flus? Sound off below!
