A Paducah firefighter was one of two people killed in a crash with a semi.

Jack (Lorin) Parks, 22, andShelby Carroll, 19, were killed when, according to DPS, Carroll's Jeep Wrangler rear-ended a semi Thursday afternoon on State Highway 349 in Martin County.

The semi had stopped to make a turn.

Jack's mom, Jori, said he and Shelby, both students at Texas Tech, were headed back to Lubbock after an ag recruiting trip in Odessa.

"I never thought I would be doing this, and it's almost too terrible to write," said Jori Parks in a Facebook post. "But my Jack and another Tech student were killed in a car wreck this afternoon."

" Our hearts are shattered. But I know that he was instantly welcomed into the arms of his Ninny and GrandDaddy and is rejoicing with them."

Paducah Fire Chief Ron Gilbert said Parks had served with the department since January 2022.

"This kid was outstanding. He was like one of my own," said Gilbert to ABC 7 News. "He was real passionate and had a big heart to help people. It's a tragedy for this community."
