Painesville Haitian bishop shares concerns over rumors, fear in Springfield

PAINESVILLE, Ohio (WOIO) - Bishop Gerard Mirbel has lived in the United States for more than four decades, yet he's never heard of rumors like those from Springfield, Ohio, against his community before.

"Sometimes people speak things and it will hurt," the leader of the Miracle Revival Ministry church said.

The unsubstantiated rumors against the Haitian immigrant community, including those about eating other people's pets, have led to dozens of threats of violence against Springfield, including schools and government buildings.

"I would not believe that," Bishop Mirbel said with a dose of humor. "Practically, it's very difficult to catch a cat."

Nonetheless, the religious leader says the claims are having an adverse effect on the Haitian diaspora across the country—including in Painesville.

"On Saturday during a service," he explained, "I was concerned, because you never know who could be in the area, what they could be thinking about Haitians, things like that."

During his interview on Monday with 19 News, he hoped to use his platform to remind Ohioans of the good Haitians have done for the state: "There are some who are working for NASA...many are here as doctors, many are here as teachers."

Last week, former president Donald Trump said he planned to visit the city of Springfield himself. So far, neither Trump or his campaign have provided any indication if or when the trip will take place.

Bishop Mirbel says the most important voice is that of the voters themselves: "What I would like to ask everyone, don't forget to vote for the person you think will help the country the most.

The religious head says the eyes of the country will continue to be on Springfield as Election Day approaches; he's calling on the Haitian community to show their kindness throughout this cycle.

"Continue to learn, continue to pray, continue to love, no hate, no violence, and that's the way it will be," he added.
