Plymouth Argyle manager Wayne Rooney given one-match touchline ban and fine for misconduct

Wayne Rooney has been given a one-match touchline ban and a £5,500 fine by the Football Association (FA) for misconduct during Plymouth Argyle's 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers on October 5.

During the latter stages of the game at Home Park, Blackburn's Joe Rankin-Costello made the score 1-1 in the 86th minute.

Rooney, 38, believed there was a foul in the build-up to the goal and angrily protested to fourth official Jacob Miles before being sent off by referee James Linington.

A statement from the FA read: "It was alleged that the manager's conduct around the 87th minute was improper and/or he used abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official, which led to his dismissal.

"It was further alleged that following his dismissal his conduct was improper and/or violent. It was also alleged that by returning to the field of play after being dismissed his behaviour was improper.

"Rooney admitted to this charge and an independent Regulatory Commission imposed his sanctions following a hearing."

After Rooney's dismissal, Plymouth went on to score an added-time winner through Morgan Whittaker in the 97th minute.

Rooney was confirmed as Plymouth head coach in May. He had been out of management since he was sacked by Birmingham City in January after just 83 days in charge of the Championship club.

Plymouth are 14th in the Championship , having won three of their nine league games this season. They are next in action against Cardiff City on Saturday, which Rooney will miss.
