PM Update: Mid-winter chill tonight and another cold one Wednesday

Z.Baker3 months ago

Gusty winds helped it feel like the 20s and 30s for much of the day. Actual temperatures weren’t much milder, with highs generally around 40 locally. It gets even colder tonight when some spots may tumble to lows in the teens. Any moderation in temperatures should wait until Wednesday is over. Lighter winds help somewhat, though.

Through tonight: There are a few flurries around into early evening. Otherwise, skies are mainly clear before some increase in cloud cover after midnight. Lows fall to a near 20 to mid-20s zone most spots. A spot like Dulles could snag a record low or get close. It would need a 17 to get there.

Tomorrow (Wednesday): Partly to mostly sunny conditions rule. High temperatures are similar to today, which means many spots fail to reach the 40s. About 36 to 41 should do it for a range. Winds blow from the northwest around 5 to 10 mph.

From not-so-cold to winter: Washington may jump right past its first official freeze to its first official hard freeze tonight. With a low of 33 this morning, the city fell just short of the mark. Tonight’s low seems likely to end up below 28. If so, it would be a bit on the early side, with an average first night that cold of Dec. 3 in our current climate. This after the first freeze is the latest in more than a decade.
