POLICE NEWS: Wolcottville woman, three children found dead

Sep. 18—WOLCOTTVILLE — Indiana State Police is investigating the death of a woman and her children.

The Wolcottville Police Department was called to the 100 block of South Main Street at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday for a welfare check on Rebecca Hughes, 32, and her three children Evelyn Newell, 8, Allison Newell, 6, and Amelia Newell, 5.

The state police were called in responding with detectives and crime scene investigators. Evidence gathered suggests there is not a public threat, a statement from ISP reads.

Toxicology reports are pending. The Indiana State Police was assisted by the Noble County Sheriff's Office, the Noble County Prosecutor's Office, and the Noble County Coroner's Office.

This is an ongoing investigation and there is no other information is currently available.

Five arrested in weekend robbery

Five people have been arrested and charged in connection with an armed robbery on Friday in Elkhart.

Elkhart Police Department responded to the call at 11:34 p.m. where two victims reported an armed robbery at 304 Middlebury St.

They told police they were messaged by a friend to go there and multiple men approached their vehicle while it was parked. One man held a knife to the female victim and struck her with his firearm, and stole her knife. The male victim, a passenger in the vehicle, reported that an armed man told him to hand over his possessions, and so he gave him his vape and wallet.

Police executed a search warrant on an apartment at 304 Middlebury St. and reportedly found a 17-year-old boy hiding inside with multiple firearms on him.

During the investigation, police arrested the teen and another 17-year-old boy and transported them to Juvenile Detention Center. Charges for armed robbery, a Level 3 felony, have been pressed against the teens, Issac Duckworth and Kaleb Goodwin.

Three other individuals were arrested in connection with this investigation on Saturday, and booked into the Elkhart County Jail on preliminary charges

Two counts of armed robbery, a Level 3 felony, were each filed for E'Marri Redmond, 19; Carrie Layon, 20; and Alora Layon, 18, all of Elkhart.

Bristol collision causes hospitalizations

A Michigan man was hospitalized after a crash on C.R. 35 in Bristol Tuesday afternoon.

Elkhart County deputies reported that at 2:34 p.m., Thomas A. Deneau, 73, of Bloomingdale, Michigan, was traveling north on C.R. 35 south in a 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe and had failed to yield the right of way, proceeding through the intersection at Ind. 120. His vehicle was struck by a 2013 Dodge Journey driven by John F. Mullen, 65, of LaGrange, police reported.

The force of the crash caused Deneau's vehicle to turn and continue traveling forward off the road northwest of the intersection. Mullen's vehicle was turned north from the impact and continued north crashing into a 2018 Ford F-150 driven by Robbie D. Grove, 60, of Middlebury, who was stopped at the intersection on C.R. 35 heading south, police reported.

Grove's vehicle was pushed backward into a 2021 Dodge Ram 1500 driven by Joseph Covyeou, 53, of Goshen, according to police.

Mullen was transported to Parkview Hospital in LaGrange, and a passenger in Deaneau's vehicle, Karl Tomion, was transported to Elkhart General Hospital.

Nappanee woman injured in Tuesday afternoon crash

One person was injured in a crash at Ind. 119 and C.R. 11 Tuesday afternoon.

Elkhart County deputies reported that at 4:42 p.m. Ezra Miller, 44, of Nappanee, was slowed and waiting on traffic before attempting to turn left, north onto C.R. 11 in a 2009 Ford F-150.

His truck was struck from behind by a 2017 Nissan Sentra driven by Katrina Holmes, 53, of Nappanee, police reported.

Holmes was transported to Goshen Hospital for treatment.

HIT-AND-RUN

—A 59-year-old Elkhart man reported to Goshen police at 10:37 a.m. Tuesday while at Target, 3938 Midway Road, that someone hit his vehicle at some point.

—A 52-year-old woman reported to Elkhart County deputies around 7:52 a.m. that she was walking on C.R. 24 east of C.R. 9 when a passing dark-colored SUV or minivan struck her arm with the mirror. The woman declined medical attention.

A 34-year-old woman reported to Elkhart County deputies that between Aug. 27 and Sept. 17 someone entered her storage unit at Storage Rentals of America, 52292 C.R. 9, Elkhart, and stole several items.

—Goshen police received a report at 4:02 p.m. Monday that a Borden trash can was stolen from the 65000 block of Harwood Drive around Aug. 1

—A 48-year-old woman reported to Elkhart County deputies that between 10 a.m. Aug. 10 and 8 p.m. Sept. 15 someone stole her Panda coin necklace from the 17000 block of Bentwood Drive in Goshen.

A 65-year-old man reported to Elkhart County deputies on Sept. 16 that someone vandalized his vehicle in the 22000 block of Lake Shore Drive in Elkhart.

A 32-year-old man reported to Elkhart County deputies on Sept. 17 that he lost about $4,600 in an online scam.
