Police pursuit ends in deadly crash in Calvert County Saturday night

A car chase started by a Calvert County Sheriff's Office deputy attempting to make a traffic stop ended in a deadly crash Saturday night.

A driver in a Ford Mustang sped past a police cruiser around 8:50 p.m. on MD Route 261 in Chesapeake Beach, according to a news release from the Maryland Office of the Attorney General, whose Independent Investigations Division is investigating the incident.

The deputy, who was wearing a body camera, activated sirens and attempted to pull over the driver, according to the release. After a chase of around 1.6 miles, the Mustang crossed into oncoming traffic and off the road, striking a telephone pole. Medics declared the driver dead on the scene, according to the release.

The attorney general's office says its independent investigation unit will release the body-camera footage within 20 days, barring any delays. The names of the driver and any officers involved will generally be released within two days.
