Prep football roundup: Big second half carries Toppenish to third straight win

S.Ramirez27 min ago

A scoreless second quarter left Toppenish locked in a tight game at halftime against Quincy, the other 1A team that joined the Wildcats in the 2A CWAC this season.

The Wildcats pulled away in the second half, scoring 28 straight points to stay perfect and keep the Jackrabbits winless. Toppenish's offense continues to thrive thanks largely to its two leaders in the backfield, quarterback Jason Sanchez and running back Kiyanno Zuniga.

Sanchez contributed to all six Wildcat touchdowns, passing for four and running for two others. He finished the night with 218 passing yards on just nine completions and carried the ball five times for seven yards.

A 19-yard completion to CJ Torres put Toppenish in front early and a 31-yard throw to Jack Davila extended the lead to 14-3. The Wildcats connected for two more long touchdowns after halftime, first to Anthony Cisneros for 32 yards on his only catch of the game and then to Alek Zapien for 51 yards as part of his team-high 108 receiving yards on five catches.

Zuniga rushed 13 times for 91 yards and came away with an interception for the Wildcats, who opened their season by beating Grandview and Prosser. Toppenish (3-0) will host winless Ellensburg next Friday.
