Pre-Thanksgiving Storm To Bring Heavy Rain, Winds To MD: Forecast
MARYLAND — Travel ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday could be a hassle with forecasts calling for heavy rain and gusty winds that will make driving and flying conditions less than ideal in Maryland on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The National Weather Service and AccuWeather are predicting a pre-Thanksgiving storm will arrive in Maryland just as most travelers take to the highways, or head to the airport to catch a flight.
The greatest travel difficulties associated with the storm will be from Tuesday to Wednesday morning in the mid-Atlantic region, AccuWeather meteorologists said.
"The stiff east-to-southeast winds averaging 25-35 mph with gusts of 40-45 mph can pose a problem at some of the airports from Washington, D.C., to Philadelphia and New York City with the worst conditions likely from late Tuesday afternoon to Tuesday evening," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tom Kines said.
Airline delays are most likely during this time due to winds, drenching rain and poor visibility, according to AccuWeather . Those heading to the airport should doublecheck their flights as delays or cancellations could be possible.
Rain will begin developing Tuesday after 10 a.m., according to the National Weather Service, with wind gusts reaching 28 miles per hour, the NWS predicted. Rainfall amounts between a half and three-quarters of an inch are possible. In far western Maryland, ice is possible on the roads.
Moderate to heavy rainfall is possible overnight, mainly before 4 a.m., with lows in the upper 40s and between 1 and 2 inches of rain possible. Winds could gust as high as 31 mph.
On Wednesday morning, expect rain mainly before 7 a.m. with wind gusts up to 26 miles per hour, NWS forecasters added. Skies will start to clear with a high near 59.
On Thanksgiving, high temperatures will be mild in the Baltimore region, with a high of about 57 degrees, with dry and breezy weather. Some showers could return Friday, forecasters said.
"A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the Allegheny Front Tuesday for the potential for ice accretion," the NWS said.
