Reconstruction slated to start on Spotsylvania road

Expect to see crews and experience delays on a busy Spotsylvania County road as work is slated to start on a long-term project to widen short stretch of Harrison Road.

The Virginia Department of Transportation said in a news release that work was scheduled to start on Monday. The work is dependent on the weather, and forecasts call for rain through Wednesday.

Plans for the $11.2 million project call for expanding the two-lane section between Gordon Road and Old Plank Road. There also will be other improvements, including the addition of a two-way center turn lane.

While the work is focused on Gordon Road, the aim of the project in part is to address congestion issues in that area, which is part of a traffic pattern of intersections that form a triangle, with intersecting points at Harrison and Gordon; Gordon and Old Plank; and Old Plank and Harrison.

The project calls for extending turn lanes and adding sidewalks and pedestrian crossing equipment at the Old Plank and Gordon Road intersections.

The work is expected to take two years, with completion expected in late summer 2026.

During the work, there will be alternating lane and shoulder closures on the short stretch of Harrison Road, and, if needed, one-way alternating traffic managed by a flagging crew.

Most of the work will be completed during the day, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., but there also will be some overnight work done, between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.

There also will be temporary traffic shifts during the work.
