Results from Rapid City-area South Dakota Legislature races
A look at local South Dakota Legislature races.
Voters in the area saw a number of contested races, choosing one senator and two representatives in each district.
All numbers according to unofficial results from the South Dakota Secretary of State's Office. Pennington County showed 73% of precincts reporting as of just after 5 a.m.
In District 32: Republican Sen. Helene Duhamel beat independent challenger Karen McNeal 60%-40%.
In the House, Democrat Nicole Uhre-Balk and Republican Rep. Steve Duffy lead a close race. Both are tied at 35%, while Republican Brook Kaufman received 30%. With all nine precincts reporting, unofficial results show Nicole Uhre-Balk at 4,133 votes, followed by Duffy at 4,111 and Kaufman at 3,547.
The district includes north and downtown Rapid City.
In District 34: Republican Taffy Howard beat Democrat Kehala Two Bulls 60%-40% in the Senate race. Howard is a former South Dakota House member
The district includes west Rapid City.
District 35: In the House, Republican Reps. Tony won with 34% of the vote apiece. Democrats Pat Cromwell and Jason Lind tied at 15%.
The district includes northeast Rapid City and Box Elder.
In District 27: Democrat Sen. Red Dawn Foster leads Republican Anthony G. Kathol 52%-48%. In the House, Republican Rep. Liz May leads with 37%, followed by Democrat Rep. Peri Pouier at 34% and Democrat Elsie Meeks at 29%.
The district includes all or parts of Bennett, Jackson, Pennington and Oglala Lakota counties.
In District 30: Republican Amber Hulse beat Democrat Bret Swanson in the state Senate race. Hulse garnered 74% of the vote to Swanson's 26%.
In the state House, Republican Rep. Trish Ladner and Tim Goodwin won with 42% and 41% of the vote, respectively. Democrat Susan Scheirbeck was third at 17%.
The district includes all or part of Pennington, Fall River and Custer counties.

Uncontested races
In Senate District 33 and Senate District 35, Republicans Curt Voight Greg Blanc won. In House District 33, Reps. Curt Massie and Phil Jensen, both Republicans, will return to Pierre. In House District 34, Republicans Rep. Mike Derby and Heather Baxter won.
