Revolutionary War Days

The Annual Revolutionary War Days will be held at the Capt. Charles McDowell House, 119 St. Mary's Church Road, Morganton, from 1-5:30 p.m. The public is invited to this free event to see demonstrations of life on the frontier in 1780 and learn about the Overmountain Men who defeated the British at Kings Mountain in a battle that turned the tide of the American Revolution. Overmountain Victory Trail Association re-enactors will observe the 50th anniversary of the annual march that commemorates this victory. Tours of the house and garden, colonial music and dancing, food, weaponry, colonial toys and games, corn husk dolls, spinning, sprang, storytelling, musket firing and special guest speakers. Hands-on activities for children and adults. The event is sponsored by Historic Burke Foundation.

Anniversary ceremony

The Overmountain Victory Trail Association will host a brief ceremony honoring the 50th anniversary of the annual march to Kings Mountain, South Carolina, at 5:15 p.m. on the Historic Burke Courthouse Grounds Outdoor Stage. Sponsored by Historic Burke Foundation and the Alexander Erwin Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, the event will include a program with Ed Phillips, CEO of the Burke Tourism Development Authority as emcee, SAR Color Guard, comments by Morganton Mayor Ronnie Thompson, storytelling by the OVTA about the Overmountain Men and about the 50-year tradition of re-enacting the march from Abingdon, Virginia to Kings Mountain, SC. The program will end with the firing of muskets in honor of the 1780 Patriots.

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 2

AARP meeting

The Burke County Chapter of the AARP will gather for refreshments at 9:30 a.m. then a presentation at 10 a.m. in the lower level of the Collett Street Recreation Center. The Burke County Council on Aging will be at the meeting with representatives from the Burke County Senior Center, Burke County Community Action, Hand-Care, Catawba Valley Medical, Foothills Service Project, Greenway Transportation and Western Piedmont Council of Governments.

THURSDAY, OCT. 3

NAACP Nominating Committee meeting

The Nominating Committee of the Burke County Chapter of the NAACP will meet at 6 p.m. at Mountain View Recreation Center, 645 First St., Morganton. The committee will give a report, receive nominations by petition and elect a supervisory committee. All members whose memberships are current as of May 1 of the election year, whose memberships have remained continuous throughout the election process and who live and/or work within the unit's jurisdiction can be nominated for office or as an at-large member of the executive committee. In order to sign a nominating petition or be elected to the election supervisory committee, a member must be current at least 30 days before the October meeting.

NAACP meeting

The Burke County Branch of the NAACP No. 5367 will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Mountain View Recreation Center, 645 1st St., Morganton. This is a branch election year. All members are encouraged to attend, especially if you are interested in running for office. You must fill out your candidates' consent form and have it signed before the November election. Social distancing and healthy protocols still are being practiced.

Day trip

Unifour Christian Ministries will take a day trip to Cherokee. The trip costs $25 per person and payment is due by Oct. 1. Berry-Chambers-Wright American Legion Auxiliary Unit 322 will meet at 4 p.m. at Post Headquarters, 204 Roper St., Morganton.

Fish fry

Berry-Chambers-Wright American Legion Post 322 will host a community fish fry from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m at Post Headquarters, 204 Roper St., Morganton. A $12 fish plate includes fish, baked beans, cornbread, coleslaw, dessert and drink. An $8 hotdog plate includes chips and a drink. All proceeds benefit the Berry-Chambers-Wright American Legion Post 322 mission to help our community's veterans and their families.

Community day

Exploring Joara Foundation will host its community day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Catawba Meadows Park, 701 Sanford Drive, Morganton. The event is open to the public. Come see native cooking, flint knapping, pottery making, black smiths, Catawba Crafters, an Arquebus and crossbow demonstration, Spanish reenactors and more. NAACP elections

The Burke County Chapter of the NAACP will hold its election for officers and at-large members of the executive committee by electronic voting platform from 4-8 p.m. In order to vote in a branch election, one must be a member in good standing with the branch 30 days before the election. The election will be conducted electronically by the national office. Ballots will be sent electronically to the email or cellphone on record.
