MURRIETA, CA — Residents of Riverside County were advised to be aware of dust and ash affecting the air quality in their communities on Friday.

A windblown dust and ash advisory went into effect at 11:30 and is expected to expire at 3 p.m. on Saturday amid high winds, South Coast Air Quality Management District said Friday.

Ash from the recent Bridge, Line and Airport Wildfires were blowing across the Los Angeles metro area, the Inland Empire and Orange County, according to satellite imagery analyzed by the SCAQMD.

Here are some tips to stay safe when the air quality is impacted by ash and smoke, according to AQMD :

  • Run your air conditioner if you have one. Make sure it has a clean filter and that it's set on "recirculate" mode.
  • Use an air purifier
  • Avoid intense physical activity.
  • Avoid using a whole house fan/swamp cooler to prevent bringing additional smoke inside.
  • Swaths of Riverside County residents are also under a wind advisory and a red flag warning through Friday as the first Santa Ana wind event of the fall season was forecast throughout the Inland Empire, according to the National Weather Service.

"Santa Ana winds will develop Friday and bring a large decrease in humidity over inland areas," the NWS said in a statement. "Gusts between 30 and 40 mph are possible in windier areas. A few areas will have combined sustained (northerly) winds of 25 mph and gusts of 35-plus mph when humidity will be less than 15%, possibly for up to six hours Friday afternoon."

The red flag warning, which implies higher wildfire risks, will be in effect from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, while a Wind Advisory will remain in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday.
