Road construction roundup: Closures to affect major Colorado Springs traffic this week

Starting Tuesday, crews will be closing multiple sections of southbound Interstate 25 several nights this week for a final lane alignment of a multi-year improvement project south of Colorado Springs.

The closure between exits at South Academy Boulevard (mile marker 135) and Santa Fe Avenue (mile marker 128) will be in place.

Drivers will detour by exiting at South Academy Boulevard onto U.S. 85/87 and then turning south onto Santa Fe Avenue through Fountain and back onto I-25.

Meanwhile, another section of interstate between South Academy Boulevard and Mesa Ridge Parkway will see similar nighttime closures.

Traffic will detour from I-25 to South Academy, onto U.S. 85/87, Mesa Ridge Parkway, and then back onto the interstate.

Also, northbound I-25 traffic will see a brief detour using the South Academy ramps at exit 135 early this week, also for lane realignment.

South Academy Boulevard

At the same time, South Academy will also see closures at I-25.

Eastbound South Academy will be closed at I-25:

Traffic will detour onto I-25 south to Colorado 16, then turn around and reenter the interstate north back to South Academy.

Westbound South Academy will also be closed overnight at I-25:

A detour will take drivers onto I-25 to the Lake Avenue/South Circle Drive exit, then turn around and reenter South Academy from southbound I-25.

Northbound South Academy will see another closure between I-25 and U.S. 85/87 for Fountain Creek bridge work.

Traffic will divert on I-25 south to Mesa Ridge, then east to U.S. 85/87 and then back northbound onto South Academy Boulevard.

The on ramp from Coventry Drive to westbound South Academy will be fully closed starting this week for drainage work, starting Monday and continuing for about two weeks.

Traffic will detour by traveling north on Maxwell Street, then turning east on U.S. 85/87 and then enter South Academy.

Fillmore Street

Fillmore will see a traffic shift starting Tuesday east of I-25 for work on the Fillmore bridges maintenance project over the creek and railroad. The closures will allow crews to repair the bridge decks on both structures, was well as waterproofing and the laying of new asphalt.

Westbound traffic will be reduced to one lane a mile east of Mark Dabling Boulevard to I-25 interchange. Eastbound traffic will have two lanes along the same section.

Left turns will be blocked from eastbound Fillmore onto Mark Dabling Boulevard or from westbound Fillmore to Steel Drive.

The project is set to be finished at the end of 2024.
