ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – A Rochester woman was scammed out of $2,000 to a scammer who called her and demanded ransom money.

According to the Rochester Police Department (RPD), the fraud, who spoke in Spanish, claimed he kidnapped the woman's daughter and wanted money immediately or he would kill her.

The scammer told the woman to go to a market near 9th Street NE and Broadway Avenue S and transfer money to an account in Mexico, all while staying on the phone.

RPD said he knew personal information about the woman and her daughter and used that to his advantage during the scam.

The daughter was never taken and arrived home after school.

RPD is investigating.
