Salvation Army's Angel Tree: giving kids a merry Christmas

SAN ANTONIO - An annual program is working to make sure every child in the Alamo city has a merry Christmas.

Between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. from Sept. 23 through Oct. 4, registration is open for the Salvation Army's Angel Tree Program, which partners with local malls and retailers to provide clothing and toys for children, seniors, and families.

The goal of the program is to ensure that families of children through 12 years old have a gift under the tree on Christmas morning.

The organization anticipates over 6,000 children in the San Antonio area will qualify for this year's program.

Parents and guardians interested in registering their children for the program must provide photo identification, proof of guardianship (with the child's date of birth), proof of residency, as well as proof of income.

Since beginning in 1979, providing toys to 700 children, The Angel Tree program has provided children with toys and clothing on Christmas when they might otherwise have none.
