San Antonio hosts Voluntary Weapons Exchange for gift cards

SAN ANTONIO - A weapons exchange event be held later this month for the community to voluntarily exchange weapons for gift cards.

The event was announced on Friday by District 9 Councilmember John Courage in a press conference. The Voluntary Weapons Exchange will be held Sunday, November 24, in the parking lot of the Alamodome.

The program allows anyone in San Antonio to exchange their weapons for H-E-B gift cards. Last year, the program gave away more than 900 gift cards.

"This initiative is aimed at people making their homes safer. To make their streets safer. To make their neighborhoods safer," said District 9 Councilmember John Courage.

In the last five years, more than 5,000 people have lost their life due to gun violence in San Antonio.
