SAN MARCOS, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — After the project was decades the making, improvements to the San Marcos Creek are now complete.

The creek runs east to west between San Marcos Boulevard and Discovery Street.

Around 214 acres received improvements, minimizing flooding concerns and helping to revitalize the creek habitat. Additionally, this project serves many purposes: keeping people safe, restoring the natural beauty of this area and connecting people with nature.

"I like the fact that there is a path going along Discovery Road, a path you can walk, ride your bike, said Cindi Thorpe, a local resident. She's among many residents who have been waiting decades for this moment.

In celebratory fashion, the city of San Marcos held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the largest capital improvement project in the city's history.

This project cost over $100 million — money coming from federal, state and local values.
