Oct. 15—A Sanford man faces four felony charges after he allegedly used counterfeit currency to purchase a red Honda Rancher ES all-terrain vehicle valued at $1,800.

Justin Christopher McKinney, 28, of Calvary Court allegedly scammed the vehicle from Dillion Downs.

McKinney is charged with larceny, obtaining property by false pretense, uttering a forged instrument and possession of stolen property stemming from June 25.

He was arrested July 8 and released the next day when Toira Reynolds promised to pay $1,000 for his release.

He was indicted on Aug. 5.

However, McKinney failed to appear in court on Sept. 25, and he was arrested the next day. He posted a $50,000 bond on Sept. 26 by paying $1,500 and promising to pay $5,000. One typically pays around 10% of the bond amount in order to be released.

A bond forfeiture notice in regard to his initial bond amount was filed on Oct. 4 by Lee Schools attorney Stephen G. Rawson. In North Carolina, bond forfeitures go to the public schools in the county in which they occurred.

Felony charges are pending in regard to two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor stemming from Jan. 2, 2021, and distribution of obscene material to a minor stemming from Feb. 20, 2021, both out of Randolph County.

In those cases, a residential address in the 1900 block of Center Cross Church Road in Asheboro and the 1100 block of W. 3rd St. in Siler City were used.

In other misdemeanor cases, residential addresses in Cameron and Robbins were listed in eCourts.
