Snake captured in Tulare County: What to do if you find one

TULARE COUNTY, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – Crews with the Tulare County Fire Department say they captured a snake in Exeter, while advising the public to be mindful of snakes – what should residents do if they found one?

On Monday, the Tulare County Fire Department said their Station 1 personnel received and handled a call at a home in the Exeter area.

Upon arrival, crews captured a snake that was found at the home. They also advised the public to be mindful that snakes are still out and about with the continuing warm temperatures.

According to the College of Natural Resources , snakes typically emerge from brumation in March or April and remain active through October, largely because they rely on external heat for warmth.

Officials also recommend those who encounter snakes to do nothing – they can walk around it, do not try to poke it or agitate it. They advise those bitten by a non-venomous snake not to be alarmed, but if bitten by a venomous snake, the best option is to go to the hospital as soon as possible.

The snake in this case was released safely, away from residences, crews say.
