Snow Flurries In Tuesday MD Forecast As Cold Blast Arrives Temperatures will drop as the coldest air of the season so far moves into the region, with snow flurries possible in portions of Maryland.

MARYLAND — Those waiting for the first snowflakes of the season in Maryland may not have to wait long. A cold air mass with gusty winds is set to move across the area and pull temperatures into the 20s Monday night into Tuesday.

Winds will begin increasing Monday as temperatures are set to drop overnight, forecasters with the National Weather Service and AccuWeather said. Tuesday will be partly cloudy and cold, with the chances of snow flurries growing.

Expect highs Tuesday to top out in the mid-to-high-30s, possibly reaching 40 in coastal areas — though it will feel colder. Wind chills will register in the 20s in places, as wind gusts could reach 30 mph, said the National Weather Service.

Cesar Cornejo, a meteorologist with WMAR-TV, said Monday that winter lovers will likely get a chance to rejoice .

"We have the possibility of seeing our first few snowflakes in Maryland this week as we see the much colder air needed to support the flying flakes," Cornejo said. "As our main cold front passes over us on Monday, we will see our winds continue to rush in from the northwest and really bring us a winter chill as temperatures drop down to the mid to low 20s during the morning hours and struggle to get into the upper 30s and low 40s during the afternoon."

As the colder air enters Maryland, there will be a small window to see some clouds and snow flurries "slide in from the northwest as we get our first shot at winter weather this season," Cornejo said.

"These snow showers will be aided by the northwest flow dragging in some residual moisture from Lake Erie to give us just the right amount to see some flakes fly," he said.

If the snow accumulates, it would be nothing more than a light dusting at best and only in a few areas given the limited amount of moisture, according to Cornejo.

North of Maryland, AccuWeather forecasters said snow squalls can quickly reduce visibility, especially on the interstate. The bulk of lake-effect snow looks to be affecting northern Pennsylvania, upstate New York, and parts of Vermont according to the AccuWeather forecast.

"There is growing concern that in addition to snow showers encompassing much of the interior Northeast on Tuesday, that snow squalls may be more expansive compared to the rest of the lake-effect event," added AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tyler Roys.

Wednesday will also be cold in Maryland, forecasters said, before a warm-up Thursday and a chance of rain this weekend.

Monday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 27. West wind 7 to 10 mph.

Tuesday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 22. West wind 8 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

: Sunny, with a high near 40. Southwest wind 7 to 10 mph.

Wednesday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 28.

: Mostly sunny, with a high near 52.

Thursday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 36.

: A chance of rain after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 53. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent.
