Springfield Township police provided more details Saturday of a sergeant's rescue of a driver during a fiery accident.

The officer who made the rescue at State Road and Collins Drive was Sgt. Patrick McKenna, a 24-year-veteran. He was treated at Crozer Chester Medical Center for smoke inhalation.

The driver, a 43-year-old Ambler man whose name was withheld by police, suffered injuries to his legs and was transported to Crozer Chester as well. Police didn't say whether he remained there on Saturday.

Springfield Sgt. Dave DiTrolio said the call came in at 4:54 a.m. Friday for a vehicle crashed into a pole.

DiTrolio gave this further account:

McKenna found a 2005 Lincoln Town Car crashed against a traffic signal light standard and found the driver inside to be unconscious. Smoke from the engine area was billowing.

McKenna was unable to open either of the two front doors. He was able to enter the vehicle by the driver side rear door and began to pull the driver out of the vehicle.

As he did this, a fire started in the engine compartment. McKenna was able to pull the driver from the vehicle as flames engulfed the vehicle.

Assisting officers Alex Fiore, Jon Sweeney and Sean Clifton, arrived and provided medical assistance to the driver until paramedics arrived and took over treatment.

Springfield Fire Company arrived to extinguish the fire and provide security to the site, which was dangerous due to leaking, combustible vehicle fluids.

The Lincoln had been travelling north on the Media Bypass (Route 1) prior to the collision.

The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation by township police.
