St. Charles officer who retired 3 years ago dies from ALS

ST. CHARLES, Ill. — The St. Charles Police Department announced Friday the death of a fellow officer just three years after he retired.

Police officer Chris Grove was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, shortly after retiring from the department in 2021.

According to St. Charles police, Grove died Tuesday at the age of 51.

The department released the following statement:

"It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of retired St. Charles Police Officer Chris Grove. Shortly after retiring, Chris was diagnosed with ALS, and sadly, he never had the chance to enjoy the retirement he worked so hard for. His health declined rapidly, and he passed on the morning of September 17th, 2024, at the age of 51, surrounded by his family."

A wake for Grove will be held Friday at Burgess Funeral Home in LaSalle and funeral services will be held Saturday at Saint Hyacinth Catholic Church in LaSalle.
