Buncombe County has reported at least 72 deaths, the most in the state. Here's how you can help. • Communities in Florida are being urged to prepare for a potential Category 3 hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico just days after Hurricane Helene made landfall in the state. Tropical Storm Milton is expected to intensify quickly. • The deal that ended a strike by 50,000 port workers has a lot of winners and few if any losers. The agreement only covers wages, not other contract provisions, but the union returned to work Friday after a three-day stoppage while those other details are negotiated. • The Supreme Court let stand Biden administration rules that would cut emissions of the planet-warming gas methane as well as mercury in a rare win for an environmental regulation pending before the conservative high court.

The week ahead October 7 marks one year since the Hamas-led assault in southern Israel when militants killed 1,200 people and took more than 250 people hostage, leading to Israel's war in Gaza and strikes in Lebanon .

CBS News will air its "60 Minutes" election special, but only one presidential candidate will be featured after former President Donald Trump backed out of a previously scheduled interview . Trump had committed to the interview first, followed by Vice President Kamala Harris, through campaign spokespeople, CBS said. CBS disclosed Trump's change of plans a few hours before the network hosted a vice presidential debate between Ohio Sen. JD Vance and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz last week.

And the first Monday in October means the Supreme Court begins a new term with new disputes dealing with discrimination, the storage of spent nuclear fuel and DNA testing for a death row inmate. The court also will decide whether a federal law prevents Mexico from suing gun distributors for allegedly facilitating the flow of firearms to drug cartels.

In what's shaping up to be the retailing equivalent of a hip-hop rivalry, Amazon kicks off Prime Big Deal Days just after midnight on the West Coast, while rival Walmart launches its first Holiday Deals event for Walmart+ members at midnight on the East Coast.

Wendy's will begin selling a special meal in honor of the 25th anniversary of the "SpongeBob SquarePants" animated TV series. The menu items, which will be available for a limited time, include a "Krabby Patty Kollab" cheeseburger and a "Pineapple Under the Sea" Frosty at its US and Canadian restaurants. (Editor's note: No actual "krabs" will be harmed in the making of the meal. It's just a regular cheeseburger but with an additional slice of cheese and a "top-secret" Krabby Kollab sauce, Wendy's says.)

Elon Musk is set to unveil Tesla's autonomous robotaxi . Tesla has dubbed the event in Los Angeles "We, Robot" — a play on Isaac Asimov's collection of science fiction short stories.

The 2024 Nobel Peace Prize winner will be announced. In 2023, the prize was given to jailed Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi for "her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all," the Nobel Committee announced last year.

In theaters It might seem crazy what I'm about to say ... but a new movie called "Piece by Piece" tells the story of musician Pharrell Williams' life with Lego pieces. It opens on Friday.

"The Apprentice" follows a young Donald Trump as he builds his real-estate business in 1970s and '80s New York with the helping hand of infamous lawyer Roy Cohn. Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong star as Trump and Cohn.

At 11:30 p.m. on October 11, 1975, the first episode of "Saturday Night Live" aired on NBC. "Saturday Night" recounts the final 90 minutes of chaos behind the scenes leading up to that first broadcast. "Saturday Night" also opens on Friday, which happens to be October 11.

What's happening in sportsAt a glance ... In the baseball playoffs , the Yankees and Guardians won their American League Division Series openers. Over in the National League, the Mets and Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in their respective series.

In the WNBA playoffs , the Las Vegas Aces staved off elimination and kept their three-peat hopes alive with a win against the New York Liberty. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Lynx face the Connecticut Sun in Game 4 of their semifinal series today.

It's already Week 5 of the NFL season! Here are five things to know.

The puck drops on a new NHL season on Tuesday. Opening day will feature a trio of matchups : St. Louis at Seattle, Boston at Florida and Chicago at Utah.
