State playoffs to begin Tuesday for 4 Lancaster County girls volleyball teams
Four Lancaster County girls volleyball teams will take the court Tuesday night in the first round of the PIAA playoffs.
In Class 4A, Hempfield will be at home, while Manheim Township faces a long trip. In Class 1A, Linville Hill Christian is hosting, while Ephrata Mennonite is traveling.
Here's a look at the pairings:
Garnet Valley at Hempfield, 6 p.m.
Perennial contender Hempfield (20-0), which won its sixth straight District Three title, is making its 22nd straight appearance in the state playoffs and has won five titles, the last in 2013.
The Black Knights have won five straight openers, including 3-0 over Upper Merion last year. They ended up losing to eventual champ North Allegheny 3-2 in the semis.
Garnet Valley (21-3) finished third in District One. The Jaguars lost 3-2 to eventual champ Unionville in the semis before beating Upper Merion 3-2 in the third-place match.
These two schools met in the first round in 2017, when Garnet Valley won 3-2.
Manheim Township at North Allegheny, 6 p.m.
The District Three fourth-place Blue Streaks (17-5) take on the seven-time defending champ and District Seven champion Tigers (17-1) after a four-hour bus ride.
Township is making its first appearance in states since 2000, when it lost to Villa Maria Academy in the first round.
The Blue Streaks lost 3-0 to Central Dauphin in the district semifinals, then 3-2 to Dallastown in the third-place match.
Northern Cambria at Linville Hill Christian, 6 p.m.
The Warriors (19-2) won their first District Three title with a 3-2 win over Ephrata Mennonite and will be making their first appearance in the state playoffs.
The District Six runner-up Colts (18-3) are in states for the first time since 2018, when they won the title. They lost to West Branch 3-1 in the district final.
Ephrata Mennonite at Tri-Valley, 6 p.m.
The District Three runner-up Legends (14-3) are in the state playoffs for the first time.
The District 11 champion Bulldogs (18-4) are in states for the first time since 2001, when they lost in the first round to Reading Central Catholic. They beat Marian Catholic 3-1 in the District 11 final.
