Steve Scalise wins 1st Congressional District seat

NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — Republican incumbent Steve Scalise won in Louisiana's 1st Congressional District on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Scalise faced off against Republican candidates Randall Arrington, Ross Shales, Democratic candidate Mel Manuel and No Party affiliate J. "Frankie" Hyers.

The 1st Congressional District consists of St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Jefferson, Orleans, Lafourche, Terrebonne, Plaquemines and St. Bernard parishes.

Scalise is an LSU graduate whose political career started in 1996 when he was elected to the Louisiana State Legislature where he served until 2008. From there he went on to serve as House Majority Whip from 2014 to 2018 and as House Minority Whip from 2019 to 2022.

His election website cited as Majority, Scalise was in charge of unifying the Republican Conference as legislation moved through the House of Representatives. He led the passing of the RESTORE Act in 2012 with legislation dedicating the Clean Water Act fines from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill to coastal restoration.

Republican Arrington is a Navy veteran and graduate of UCLA. He has a career path as a military officer and professor of political science.

Republican Shales is an LSU and Notre Dame Seminary Graduate School graduate with career experience as an insurance agency owner.

Democrat Manuel is a Tulane University and La Sapienza University graduate who has worked as a public-school teacher.

Unaffiliated Hyers is a Los Angeles native whose career experience includes manager at UPS, HVAC commercial and residential installer and journeyman, electrician, piano mover and technician, poet, writer, and composer.
