Strong storms Friday afternoon, evening could pack 60 mph winds, large hail

Some areas across Michigan may be in line for strong or possibly severe storms Friday afternoon and evening, the National Weather Service (NWS) said.

The area with the highest likelihood for storms packing high winds and even hail is the southwest quarter of the Lower Peninsula. Grand Rapids, Holland, Grand Haven, Kalamazoo are in this area, as are Benton Harbor, South Haven and St. Joe.

Here is what the NWS meteorologists in the Grand Rapids office offered as their forecast highlights today:

  • A line of scattered storms should develop over West Michigan
  • Timing is noon until 8 p.m.
  • Severe storms will be possible
  • The main threats would be damaging wind gusts to 60 mph and large hail to 1 inch
  • You should note that this level of storm threat is still considered "marginal," and that tornadoes are not in the forecast.

The biggest concerns seems to be the high winds, and any power outages or tree damage they could cause.

In the forecast notes today, NWS staff said the biggest piece of the storm threat will remain west of U.S. 131.

"We are not expecting widespread severe weather, but some isolated to scattered wind/hail reports will certainly be possible today."
