Style experts explain how to dress like Meg Ryan for 'Nora Ephron fall'

Nora Ephron fall has become a cultural phenomenon in recent years, as millennial and Gen Z women rush to dress like Meg Ryan and other characters from her famed rom-coms in chunky cable knit sweaters and cozy turtlenecks.

New York-based culture editor Ilana Kaplan recently released the book Nora Ephron at the Movies: A Visual Celebration of the Writer and Director Behind When Harry Met Sally, You've Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, and More.

The coffee table tome discusses the proliferation of 'Nora Ephron fall,' which has experienced a major resurgence in recent years - in fact, You've Got Mail costume designer Albert Wolsky, 93, even opened up to InStyle recently about styling the film.

While Nora's signature rom-coms were released more than 25 years ago, the classic styles seen in her films are still just as popular today.

To find out why the fashion resonates years after Nora passed away at 71 in 2012 , FEMAIL reached out to Ilana, as well as fashion experts.

British Vogue covered the ongoing trend, offering up suede pieces that promised to elevate autumnal looks and fit with the aesthetic, while Vanity Fair procured plaid skirts and chunky knits that captured the look.

Ilana told DailyMail.com that when it comes to 'Meg Ryan fall,' she immediately thinks of 'Sally's bowler hat and tweed blazer in Washington Square Park, Harry and Sally crouching in their cable knit sweaters and Meg happily carting a pumpkin in hand in a black coat and skirt.'

Ilana believes these fashion staples helped shape the 'cozy aesthetic' of the New York City filmmaker's famed rom-coms over the years.

The culture editor thinks these now-iconic looks are so popular because 'they feed into a nostalgic fantasy of fall.'

The resurgence of these fashion moments on social media also helped, as well as the fact that they're classic and feed into the quiet luxury trend .

' Meg Ryan fall' also spans generations - Ilana explained that because of TikTok, 'Gen Z is now ushering in a new generation of Ephronites.'

Ear Sass , founder and stylist Sophie McGown , based in London, agreed that 'the trademark feel of a Nora Ephron and Meg Ryan-inspired fall is 'cozy autumnal outfits,' which are 'somewhere between simple, studious, and timeless.'

Sophie thinks 'it's not just about cozy cable-knit sweaters or turtlenecks' and that it's 'the layering (think thick wool tights with a jumper dress), clean lines, and a mixture of oversized and tailored pieces, along with a muted color palette' that sets it apart.

Sophie, whose designs have been worn by Kate Middleton, thinks part of the popularity is because of a 'back to school' mentality, leading people to refresh their wardrobe every fall with investment pieces that won't go out of style.

Sophie suggested updating the outfits with accessories, like chunky earrings or a modern take on a statement necklace.

Fashion consultancy Collection Atelier co-founder and CEO Allie Pellerano-Rendón told FEMAIL while Nancy Meyers movies claim spring summer - think cottagecore and coastal grandma - 'Nora Ephron owns fall.'

'The key pieces featured in You've Got Mail and When Harry Met Sally share a common thread.

'They're not about designer labels or flashy logos, but about effortless comfort and approachable style,' Allie explained.

Allie suggested 'tailored pants, layered cardigans, tights, and oxfords' for practical and timeless looks that 'can be easily recreated using classic pieces most people already own.'
