WAYNE TOWNSHIP, Ohio ( WXIX /Gray News) - An Ohio school district is in mourning after a high school student died in a serious crash this week.

According to the Butler County Sheriff's Office, the student was involved in a head-on collision Thursday morning on West Elkton Road.

The 16-year-old was behind the wheel of a 2005 Pontiac when the vehicle suddenly traveled left and struck an oncoming 2013 Chevrolet Suburban.

The teen driver was pronounced dead at the scene and his 13-year-old sister, who was also in the car, suffered critical injuries. She was flown to the Dayton Children's Hospital for treatment.

The SUV driver was 60-year-old Kevin Johnson, a social studies teacher for Edgewood City Schools. He also suffered critical injuries in the crash and was sent to the Miami Valley Hospital.

Authorities said the 16-year-old and his sister were heading to their father's house that morning to get ready for school.

"We will have counselors and support staff available for any student who wishes to talk or needs help processing this tragedy," Preble Shawnee Local Schools Superintendent Todd Bowling said. "We will not be making a formal announcement to the entire student body, but we will be providing support as needed."

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The sheriff's office did not immediately identify the 16-year-old driver or his 13-year-old sister.
