Teen, Mom Hurt In Detroit Shooting After Argument Between Kids: Cops The mother is expected to recover, while the teen was in "extremely critical" condition, according to police.DETROIT — A teen and his mother were injured in a Thursday night Detroit shooting that stemmed from a fight between two children, Detroit Police Assistant Chief Charles Fitzgerald told reporters.
The shooting happened at 6 p.m. Thursday night in the 800 block of Delaware Street, near Lodge Freeway, according to Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald said the incident began with two kids, ages 6 and 8, who were arguing. A 13-year-old, who is somehow related to one of the kids, stepped in and tried to stop the fight, according to Fitzgerald.
The 8-year-old then went home and returned with a 14-year-old family member and his mother, according to Fitzgerald.
The two teens started arguing as a 16-year-old then showed up with his mother and got involved in the altercation, according to Fitzgerald.
The 16-year-old's mother tried to stop him from getting involved in the fight, but he pulled out a gun and fired shots, striking the 14-year-old in the head and his mother in the arm, according to Fitzgerald.
The mother is expected to recover while the 14-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital where he was listed in "extremely critical" condition, according to Fitzgerald.
The shooter dropped the gun and ran away from the scene, but was quickly captured by undercover officers who were working a separate incident in the area, according to Fitzgerald.
Officers also arrested another teen who tried picking up the weapon and walking away, according to Fitzgerald.
Officers recovered the weapon, according to Fitzgerald.
Police were still investigating the incident and asked anyone with information to contact the Detroit Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-Speak-Up.
