BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (PIX11) — Shutdowns on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway will likely mean slowdowns for weekend travelers.

The Department of Transportation will be shutting down Staten Island-bound lanes on the BQE from1 a.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday.

The shutdown will make room for crews to install high tech scales and license plate-reading camera systems that will help to identify overweight vehicles on the expressway.

According to the DOT, overweight trucks shorten the lifespan of the roadway and jeopardize the pedestrian area on the top level, the Brooklyn Promenade.
