Twin Ports Cyclery to change hands after 50 years

DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) - Many local cyclists have found their way into Twin Ports Cyclery.

Denis Sauve is the owner of the longtime business, which he started back in 1975.

The shop started in Canal Park and moved to its current location in Lincoln Park in 1978.

When he discovered his love for cycling, Denis wanted to open a shop where he could not only help people repair their bikes, but educate them about their equipment.

After 50 years of running the shop, Denis and his wife are ready to pass on the torch.

Bill Summer is a close friend of Denis and has been trying to convince him for years to sell the shop to him.

"I put the bug in his ear years ago," said Summer. "Well, then last year about this time, I got the call."

Although Denis never saw himself retiring, he feels good about leaving the business in Summer's hands.

"There were a lot of other people who wanted to buy the shop, but I figured these two had the right attitude about it," said Sauve.

Bill knows he has some big bike pedals to fill, but plans on keeping things pretty classic and true to the way Denis has been running it all these years.

"I have to believe that the Twin Ports Cyclery is probably Duluth's most iconic bike shop and that in itself is just really something," said Summer. "Really proud to own this."

Denis is excited for this next chapter of his shop's history, but isn't giving up the biking industry quite yet.

"I live across the street," Sauve said. "I can come over in the busy parts of the year and help do some wrenching. I think that will work out."
