Gardaí and emergency services are at the scene of Pizza Max, a fast-food takeaway premises located just yards from where a devastating fire broke out along the town's Grafton Court area in July, causing an estimated €3m of damage in the process.

It's believed the fire emanated from a fryer which had overheated and burst into flames seconds later.

Local businesswoman, Shabban Naz who operates a local retail outlet nearby, told of how she thought the fire started.

"The fryer was overheating and a customer threw water on it," she said. "He was standing behind the counter and he threw the water."

Gardaí and fire crews from Longford Fire Station, together with ambulance personnel are still at the scene.

A garda spokesperson confirmed officers were in situ, but was not in a position to reveal the nature or extent of the injuries sustained by those involved.

"Gardaí assisted emergency services personnel at the scene of a fire at a premises on Main Street, Longford shortly after 1pm today," said the spokesperson.

The Irish Independent has reached out to Longford Fire Services and is awaiting a response.
