UMW roundup: Ladehoff, Fisher win ITA regional doubles title

J.Lee29 min ago

UMW men's tennis had a strong weekend as Brock Ladehoff and Evan Fisher defended their home court, winning an ITA Southeast Regional tennis title on Sunday morning.

They dominated the competition as the No. 5 seed in the draw, winning six doubles matches over three days to take home some hardware for the Eagles.

With the incredible duo of Peter Leese and Rishi Charan Shankar having graduated this spring, that leaves a spot at the top for a new No. 1 doubles team within the program and it looks like Ladehoff and Fisher are ready to take that spot.

SATURDAY'S GAMES

Women's soccer

UMW 1, Hood College 0: After a thrilling 2-1 win for the men's team over Messiah, the women's team took on Hood College, staying tough in a 1-0 defeat of the Blazers.

Junior midfielder Ellen Shine scored her first collegiate goal ever and first-career goal with UMW in the win, scoring in the 80th minute. That came after a barrage of shots from the Eagles (4-3-2), finally putting one in the back of the net after more than 10 shots on net just in the second half alone.

Saturday's victory gave Mary Washington two wins in their last three matches overall heading into its next match at St. Mary's (Md.) on Tuesday night.

Eastern 3, UMW 0: Mary Washington started off its Saturday tournament doubleheader in Baltimore with a straight-set loss against Eastern, 10-25, 14-25, 16-25.

It was a much more successful afternoon on the attack side for UMW (7-8), with a .161 hitting percentage and 26 kills. For what the Eagles were able to do, Eastern did it better, finishing with a .363 hitting percentage and 47 kills to just 10 attack errors. Four Eastern players had at least eight kills, with two recording 10 or more.

UMW was led by Ally Fletcher, hitting .467 (eight kills, one attack error), in the loss.

Johns Hopkins 3, UMW 0: Unfortunately for Mary Washington, the weekend ended with yet another straight-set loss against Johns Hopkins, 16-25, 21-25, 19-25, the Eagles' fourth-straight overall.

UMW has now lost its last 12 sets consecutively, stretching across four matches. Yet the Eagles had another successful effort offensively, improving with each match in the Johns Hopkins Invitational, as they hit .179 with a weekend-high 31 kills.

Defensively, Mary Washington couldn't find a way to keep up with the Blue Jays, who hit over .300 as a team with 44 kills, including 12 from Simone Adam.

Fletcher and Sarah Moore did have a solid match, each recording at least seven kills. UMW heads to St. Mary's (Md.) for its next match on Thursday night.
