Update: Heat advisory for Southeast Alabama for Friday

On Thursday at 9:36 p.m. an updated heat advisory was issued by the National Weather Service valid for Friday between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. for Coffee, Dale, Henry, Geneva and Houston counties.

The weather service describes, "Heat index values up to 111 degrees expected."

"Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses," adds the weather service.

  • Seek cool shelter: Stay indoors in an air-conditioned room to keep cool.

  • Child and pet safety: Never leave young children and pets alone in vehicles, especially during hot weather when car interiors can become dangerously hot in a matter of minutes.

  • Time your activities wisely: If possible, move strenuous activities to early morning or evening for more favorable conditions.
  • Recognize heat-related issues: Recognize the warning signs and familiarize yourself with symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • Stay cool with clothing: Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing to stay cool.

  • The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas for outdoor workers.
