UT Tyler Medical Education Building less than year out from completion

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - After nearly two years of construction, the UT Tyler Medical Education Building is now estimated to be complete by Fall 2025. Although originally estimated to be complete in the Spring, UT Tyler President Dr. Julie Philley says a project of this size is just taking time. "It's kind of like building a really huge house. It goes up very quickly in the beginning on the outside and it's exciting to see the progress, but now the work really shifts to the interior, and that takes a while," she said. The building will be almost 250,000-square-feet and will stand five stories tall. It was designed to serve both the School of Medicine as well as East Texans in need of outpatient care. According to Dr. Philley, the med school students will be the first to move in and use the space. "I think that they cannot wait to be in the space. It's really designed for students and patients. It's putting students and patients at the heart of everything we do," she said. The interior design includes classrooms, labs and even operating rooms. It will be used by students, medical residents, nurses, physicians and East Texas patients. It is a $308 million project.
