Vehicle ran stop sign in triple fatal Polk County crash, authorities say

POLK COUNTY, Iowa — Officials say speed and a vehicle running a stop sign were contributing factors in a crash that killed three people Sunday night east of Ankeny .

The two-vehicle crash happened just before 8:00 p.m. at the intersection of NE 46th Street and NE 94th Avenue, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office. Captain Ryan Evans of the PCSO tells WHO 13 the vehicle northbound on NE 46th was traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at the stop sign then collided with a vehicle eastbound on NE 94th Avenue.

Suspect in 17-year-old's death in custody, charges pending

The driver of the northbound vehicle and the driver and the passenger in the eastbound vehicle were all pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The names of the deceased have not been released to allow officials time to notify family members.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the crash.
