February 26, 1932 - June 28, 2024

SUN PRAIRIE - Vernon (Vern) G. Suchomel, age 92, passed away on Friday, June 28, 2024, at home surrounded by family.

He was born on February 26, 1932, to Vincent and Mathilda (Benisch) Suchomel in Madison. Vern graduated from Sacred Hearts and Sun Prairie High School, where he enjoyed playing sports. He was married for 72 years to his high school sweetheart, Carol Schoenherr.

In 1951, Vern served in Korea as a Sargent in the Army, a tour that lasted four years. Once discharged from the military Vern returned home to work at the WI Porcelain Co. for 40 years. Upon retirement, he was a faithful volunteer at Sacred Hearts. His volunteering knew no bounds, he was an active member of the Cemetery Association and had such pride in caring for the cemetery, he worked the Fall Festival and Luke House, he mowed the Athletic Field, he led the Rosary at 6:30 a.m. Mass, as well as being an Usher, Server and Lay Communion Distributor. Vern was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. He was a Women's Softball Coach and an Umpire for Little League, American Legion and the Home Talent. He was a member of the Prairie Aces Band. Vern loved to fish, bowl and travel with friends to Branson. He was Famous for his Brandy Old Fashioneds. Vern was a member of the American Legion Post #333 and was privileged to participate in the Badger Honor Flight. Vern had a rewarding second career playing Santa for many families over 60 years, he truly was a special friend to children and the multitude of families, over generations, whose lives he touched with his special December visits. He was a proud and loving husband to his sweetheart Carol, and dedicated father to his family. Vern loved the outdoors whether he was mowing, gardening or relaxing with Carol in a lawn chair watching the cars going by and greeting neighbors as they walked.

He is survived by: his wife Carol; three daughters: Judy Mitchell, Sharon (Rick) Ouimette, and Cyndi Suchomel; five sons: Douglas (Renee), Gary (Jane), Dave (Sue), Jeff (Lisa), Scott (Jaci); 19 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family.

Vern is preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Leander, Roman, Rudy, Reinold, and Al; sisters: Frances Breunig, Cyrilla Deter, Cecilia Prosser, Agnes Webber, Florence Weber and two infant births; son-in-law, Scott Mitchell; daughter-in-law, Carol Suchomel; and two infant grandsons.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Hearts Catholic Church, 229 Columbus St. on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, with Father Vince Brewer and Monsignor Duane Moellenberndt concelebrating. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Tuschen-Newcomer Funeral Home, 302 Columbus St., and on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass at the church. Burial will be at Sacred Hearts Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sacred Hearts Building and Grounds or Agrace Hospice.
