TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The U.S. Coast Guard conducted a medical evacuation of a Carnival cruise ship on Thursday near Mona Island, Puerto Rico. The patient, a 69-year-old woman was aboard the Carnival Vista cruise ship when she experienced health complications and required additional medical care ashore, according to the USCG. The Coast Guard said watchstanders located in Sector San Juan received communication from the cruise ship Thursday afternoon requesting medical evacuation for a patient on board. "This case required a significant amount of coordination and planning by everyone involved," said Lt. Luke Dewhirst, Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen MH-60T Jayhawk aircraft commander for the case. "Thanks to the Carnival Vista crew and Sector San Juan watchstanders for working with us to establish a rendezvous position amid inclement weather. Our crew performed phenomenally in conducting multiple challenging hoists to safely transport the patient to a higher level of care." A cruise ship nurse and the patient's spouse were also brought onto the helicopter by a rescue basket. According to USCG. the patient was transported to the Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where local emergency medical service personnel transported her to Centro Médico Hospital.
