Waco-area news briefs: PawSafe festival to offer tips for loose dogs, vaccinations

VA blood drive

The Doris Miller Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Carter BloodCare will hold a blood drive from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday in Building 6 at the medical center, 4800 Memorial Drive.

Health fair

Church Under the Bridge's semiannual health fair will run from 8 to 10 a.m. Sunday, followed by a meal and worship, at the church's regular meeting spot under Interstate 35 between Fourth and Fifth streets.

Various health-related booths hosted by Baylor University's public health department, McLennan Community College and other local organizations will be present to serve the community.

Parking is available nearby at Baylor's Hurd Welcome Center, 901 S. University Parks Drive. For more information, call 254-235-7818.

Crawford Methodist fundraiser

Crawford Methodist Church will hold a Lord's Acre fundraiser starting at 11 a.m. Sunday in the Crawford High School cafeteria, 200 Pirate Drive.

The event will feature pulled pork sandwiches, a live auction and a silent auction. All proceeds will benefit local community programs.

Safety around loose dogs

PawSafe Fall Festival will run from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Amsler Park, 110 Red Oak Road in McGregor.

The event will cover strategies for attendees to protect themselves and their pets in the event they are approached by a loose dog.

Organizers have turned five safety tips into carnival games. There will also be food trucks, vendor booths, rescues with adoptable pets, a pet costume contest, and informational booths on pet-safe plants, ways to combat pet-related housing issues and more. Pet microchips and vaccines will be available at a low cost.

Roof repair program

Grassroots Community Development is accepting applications through Nov. 4 for its roof repair program for low-income families in Waco.

Applications are available at the Grassroots office, 1624 Colcord Ave., or at grassrootswaco.org .

Money available this year is expected be enough for 23 roofs. The program is in its 10th year and has replaced about 200 roofs so far.

Instant Pot holiday cooking

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service of McLennan County and McLennan Community College Continuing Education will hold an Instant Pot Cooking: for the Holidays class from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24.

Instructor Rachel Esquivel, an Extension agent, will teach about how to make quick and delicious sides for holiday gatherings.

The cost for the class is $30, and the registration deadline is Monday.

Meet the Author

Baylor University history professor Elesha Coffman will discuss her book, "Turning Points in American Church History: How Pivotal Events Shaped a Nation and a Faith," from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Schumacher Flex Commons in Moody Memorial Library, part of Baylor's Readers Meet the Author series. Elizabeth Flowers, a Baylor associate professor of American religion, will interview Coffman.

A reception with refreshments and book signing will follow. The Baylor Bookstore will sell copies of the book at the event.

Champions of Christian Service

Mission Waco's Champions of Christian Service breakfast will start at 6:45 a.m. Tuesday at the Baylor Club in McLane Stadium, 1001 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

Tickets cost $50 and are available at missionwaco.org/events .

Vince Clark, McClennan Community College head golf coach, will be the featured speaker.

Medicare education

The Area Agency on Aging will hold a free Medicare education meeting at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at 1514 S. New Road.

People approaching Medicare qualification can learn about the federal program, including how to avoid scams and fraud. The meeting will also discuss the differences between supplemental insurance and Medicare Advantage, and suggest tips on saving money.

Light refreshments will be served.

Mum making

The Martin Museum in the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center at Baylor University will offer daily workshops for participants to make their own Baylor homecoming mums, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 22-25.

Supplies will be provided. The workshops are free and open to all Baylor students while supplies last.

Cicada pinning workshop

Cultivate 7twelve, 712 Austin Ave., will hold a Halloween Cicada Pinning Workshop from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 25.

Participants will learn to pin and preserve an orange winged cicada for display. Tools will be provided. Participants younger than 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

The workshop include a glass of wine, and the venue is BYOB-friendly.
