Washington County races: Newport City Council

Mayor Laurie Elliot is running unopposed. Newport voters will pick two city council members from among four candidates. The candidates include incumbent Marvin Taylor and Paul Hansen, Josh Schmidt and Brian Xiong. Council member Kevin Chapdelaine decided not to run for re-election.

What would your top priorities be if elected?

What qualifies you to hold this position? I have worked hard to serve Newport over the past decade as a planning commissioner, firefighter, and city councilor.

What do you think is the primary role of government? Providing high-quality services and amenities in a cost-effective manner.

How do you work to understand, and then learn from, opinions that differ from your own and people who disagree with you? More often than not, I welcome and enjoy a lively exchange with a healthy dose of disagreement. Where disagreement becomes problematic, in my view, is when it carries over to issue after issue.
